Dial Plan Tutorial

For the most part, ViaTalk sends out the PAP2T-NA adapters preconfigured with a dial plan that works great in most situations.  The following tutorial is for the advanced users who wish to tweek their dial plans and customize it.  Since ViaTalk remotely provisions the equipment, you will either need to turn provisioning off or make ViaTalk aware of any changes you want made by submitting a ticket to their technical support. *Note* Messing with the dial plan can be disasterous if handled incorrectly!  Proceed with caution!

ViaTalk Dial Plan:

(*xx|*xxxxxxxxx|*xxxxxxxxxxxxx|*xxx|xxx|xxxx|[3469]11|0|00|[2-9]xxxxxx|1xxx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|xxxxxxxxxxxx.|011xxxxxxxxxx)

Each setting separated by the wall | is a valid dialed number.  Every x is a wild card, and can be any number 0 through 9. Anything within [] will limit that digit to be those numbers, for example [3469] will only be valid if you dial a 3, 4, 6, or 9. A . (period) at the end of a string will allow multiple digits to be dialed indefinitely, it is the ultimate variable. Finally, an will automatically change the Interdigit Short Timer to the specified time value imput if you dialed the proper string  So broken down piece by piece we can assume the following from ViaTalk's dial plan:

  • *xx - This is for two-digit star codes
  • *xxxxxxxxx - This is for two-digit star codes, followed by a seven-digit phone number
  • *xxxxxxxxxxxxx - This is for two-digit star codes, followed by an eleven-digit phone number
  • *xxx - This seems like it is mainly for voicemail access and call broadcast
  • xxx - I am unsure what this is truly for
  • xxxx - Once again, I am unsure of what this is truly for
  • [3469]11 - Information and emergency usage
  • 0 - Operator assistance
  • 00 - Not sure what this is actually for, possibly international operator assistance
  • [2-9]xxxxxx - seven-digit dialing
  • 1xxx[2-9]xxxxxxS0 - Immediate eleven-digit dialing
  • xxxxxxxxxxxx. - I’m pretty sure this is what truly makes international calling work.
  • 011xxxxxxxxxx - I think this was intended to allow international calling, but not all international numbers are just 10 digits long.

A Sample Modified Dial Plan:

The dial plan I have modified my PAP2 to is as follows:

(*xx.|[3469]11S0|0|[2-9]xxxxxxS1|[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS1|1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|011x.)

  • *xx. - This will allow for two-digit star codes, three-digit star codes, two-digit star codes followed by seven-digit phone numbers, two-digit star codes followed by ten-digit phone numbers, and two-digit star codes followed by eleven-digit phone numbers.
  • [3469]11S0 - Information and emergency, immediately sent out
  • 0 - Operator assistance
  • [2-9]xxxxxxS1 - Seven-digit dialing. The S1 forces the adapter to wait one second before dialing out, just in case I dial more digits
  • [2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS1 - Ten-digit dialing, sent out after one second wait
  • 1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0 - Eleven-digit dialing, once again, sent straight out
  • 011x. - This will allow for any international dialing conceivable of any length.
