How do I know if I'm eligible for service?
Our service works through your internet connection at your home or office. For broadband phone services you will need:
- Broadband Internet Service. For example: DSL, Cable, or Fiber Optics.
- A touch tone phone, either cordless or corded.
- A phone adapter (Analog Telephone Adapter).
- A broadband router. This is important as you will not be able to make a call and be on the Internet at the same time without a router.
- A valid credit or debit card for billing purposes.
Do I have to be at my house to use my ViaTalk phone?
You can bring your ViaTalk phone with you anywhere in the world just as long as you can get a broadband Internet connection. Simply connect the adapter at your new location and your phone will function as if it were in your own home.
Does my computer have to be turned on?
No, your computer does not have to be turned on in order to make a phone call using your ViaTalk broadband phone. Your ViaTalk adapter DOES have to be plugged in, in order for you to place a call.
Can I still use my computer while I am on the phone?
Yes, you are able to use your computer and surf the web while you are talking on your ViaTalk broadband phone. We recommend that you have at least a 512Kbps download and a upload speed of 96Kbps for optimum performance.
Who can I call with my ViaTalk phone?
Unlike some Internet phone companies who only offer calling to other subscribers of your VoIP network, ViaTalk lets you talk to anyone anywhere. The person you are trying to call doesn't need any fancy equipment. All they need is a phone.
Is there difference between making a Local Call and a Long Distance Call?
No. While using ViaTalk all calls that are made within the U.S and Canada are covered under your service plan. This does not apply for international phone calls.
Will my ViaTalk phone work during a power outage?
In the rare case of a power outage, if you do not have a back-up power source for your high-speed modem, broadband router, Analog Telephone Adapter and cordless phone (if applicable), your ViaTalk phone service will not work. There are ways to get around this rare power outage problem. One way to do this is to purchase an inexpensive Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to provide temporary power to your equipment.
Can I connect multiple phones to my line?
Yes, you can connect multiple phones to your phone adapter through several different methods.
- You can install the phone adapter to any phone jack in your home. It will then be available on all phone jacks in your house. If you decide to use this method be sure to unplug your current connection to phone service FIRST. Failure to do so can potentially damage the device. Visit the Installation Guide FAQ for more information on this.
- Multiple jack extension connectors can be inserted into the phone adapter. Multiple lines can then be run into the adapter.
- Some cordless phones are available on the market today which include multiple handsets which have one base where you can connect your adapter.
We recommended going with option 3.
Does my plan include calls to Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada?
Yes, all calls to Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada are considered part of your Domestic Long Distance calling area.
Can I use Soft Phone with your services ?
